How to Find Your Real Skin Type for the Right Skincare Routine ?

Do you know your skin type, or unsure about it? Generally, most people have an idea about the type of skin they have, particularly people with oily and dry skin.

On some occasions, however, it is not easy to figure out your real skin type if it is other than oily or dry. Well, different skin types are normal, sensitive, and combination skin and they need specific treatment as well.

Understanding your skin type will help you get the ideal skincare routine. If you buy beauty products regularly, you need to purchase something that will suit your skin type rather than working against it.

1. The Day Test to Know Your Skin Type

The easiest way to find out your skin type is to observe how well it does from morning to evening on a day. Here are the likely results:

Skin Condition (Towards the Day End)

Skin Type

Does your skin have minimal oil, redness, or flakiness, or nothing at all?

Normal skin

Has your face turned oily and appear shiny?

Oily skin

Does your skin feel tight or flaky?

Dry skin

Is there redness, itchiness, or inflammation in your skin?

Sensitive skin

Does your T-zone shine, but the remaining of your face is matte?

Combination skin

There is a common notion about dehydrated skin type. There is no such skin type. Dehydration is a separate condition. Your skin can get dehydrated even when it is oily, dry, sensitive, or all the above.

2. Do the Wash Test

Harsh weather conditions, like wind, or scorching sun, take a toll on your skin. Doing a wash test will determine how your skin deals with these external skin irritants.

Wash your face using a mild cleanser and do not apply makeup or any product. Then, wait for 30 minutes and observe how your skin feels.

Take this test when the face feels calm and stable. It means do not try it after coming back home from the raging sun or after an intensive workout.

3. Take Pictures of Your Skin

A dermatologist or an aesthetician may apply some photographic methods to help you assess your skin’s behavior if required.

A skin specialist can identify and tell you if your skin is sensitive, irritated, sun-damaged, and prone to pigmentation or rosacea. Besides, subtle changes in pore size or skin texture may indicate oil production.

Skin Type May Change with Time

Women may experience a change in their skin type over the years due to diet change, pregnancy, climate, and other factors.

The ideal way is to feel your skin is to understand the change. It means by touching your skin with clean hands and feeling the texture, buoyancy, and temperature.

Also, take a soft pinch test often to evaluate your skin’s hydration levels.

You can balance your skin type in the following ways:

Skin Type

Balancing

Normal skin

Take preventive measures to protect the skin, and use SPF, antioxidants, etc.

Oily skin

Restore the skin’s balance with oils and clay masks

Dry skin

Healthy Skin: Treatment Solutions

Generally, healthy skin is rare. If you have this skin type, that is great! However, do not forget to take good care of it. Use high-quality sunscreen and an anti-aging evening product with a retinoid as part of your skincare routine.

1. Oily Skin: Treatment Solutions

Try using oil-based skin care products and avoid the ones that dry the skin.

Keep your skin hydrated. Dehydrated skin can lead to increased oil production and clogged pores.

Apply sulfur-based spot corrector to treat blemishes.

Use a toner containing saltwater or seaweed.

Apply a clay mask that has bentonite.

2. Dry Skin: Treatment Solutions

While showering or bathing, avoid too hot water.

In the morning, you can skip using a cleanser.

Buy a humidifier.

Apply cleansing oils or creams that do not require rinsing off.

Try a sheet mask at night.

3. Sensitive Skin: Treatment Solutions

Careful how your skin reacts to essential oils.

Avoid products that contain ingredients like parabens or sulfates.

Use products that do not have fragrance and dyes.

4. Combination Skin: Treatment Solutions

Exfoliate your skin with a mild enzyme mask.

Using a balancing toner would be ideal.

Treat acne-prone patches with a roll-on containing tea tree oil.
