About

McGough & Co owner , jeweler Sam McGough, has a jewelry emporium in Whitefish that must be seen to be believed. He{s got a gem of an enterprise and a gem of a story.Born in an Alabama town of 200 people, Sam moved with his family to Arizona when he was ten, and the good hunting and fishing there suited this country boy just fine. After high school, he ran heavy equipment for about ten years until 1973, when he had to have back surgery and a new career."In those days," Sam recalls, "Indian jewelry was really hot and I started out buying from Indians and suppliers and traveling all over the country selling it to stores. When I couldn{t buy everything I needed, I started a small manufacturing company. In three years, I had 200 employees. In four years, I had 300 employees and, at one point, I was the second largest jewelry manufacturer west of the Mississippi."By 1979 Arizona had grown so much Sam was looking to move. When he was about to buy a ranch in northern Arizona, an employee told him he had to see Whitefish first. He and wife flew up on New Year{s Day 1980 to see some property "and four hours later I owned it," Sam grins. "It was love at first sight.
