Gaita Memorial Home has been a family owned and operated funeral home since its foundation in 1961 by Alfonse Gaita and his wife, the former Donna Stokes. Previously, it had been a well - known tavern on the Newark to Pompton Turnpike, called Gus and Gerts{. Many different social organizations held its meetings on that site. Alfonse operated the funeral home until his untimely death in 1963, at which time Donna became a funeral director and managed the funeral home until 1973.
