About

Founded in 1988, the Writers’ Room of Boston is an urban writers’ retreat committed to providing a quiet, affordable, and secure workspace for emerging and established writers. Members can choose to meet regularly for readings, the WROB salon, and other community events. An annual reading of the members’ work  is organized every summer and open to the public. The Writers’ Room is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization governed by our members and a board of directors, which is comprised of Room members and community leaders. The Room is supported by quarterly, sliding-scale membership dues and contributions from both public and private sources. In an effort to minimize the cost to our members, outside funders provide more than half of the operating expenses of the Room. The Emerging Writers Initiative of the Writers’ Room of Boston is dedicated to providing workspace to local writers in need of financial assistance who are at the early stage of their career. We are especially grateful to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Boston Cultural Council for their support of the Emerging Writers’ Initiative. In recent years, the Morris S. Smith Foundation, the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation, and the Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation have  generously funded the Room.
