Dr Jane McCarthy graduated from Sydney University with a  Bachelor Dental Surgery with Honours in 1984.On graduation she commenced general dental practice in Wodonga Victoria under the tutelage of Dr Brian Hannath.  Whilst working with Dr Hannath she developed a keen interest in the speciality of Periodontics.After travelling and working in the UK and Europe she returned to Perth Australia and worked as a lecturer in Restorative dentistry UWA  during 1990-1991.  During these years she maintained a part time private practice working for another important mentor Dr Lawrie Baker in Perth.Wanting to pursue specialist training Jane relocated to Melbourne to complete a  masters degree in Periodontology from 1992-1994, including her thesis “DNA probe for Porphyromonas gingivalis in periodontitis patients”,under the supervisison of Prof Eric Reynolds.At the completion of her training in periodontology Dr McCarthy was invited to take up a Post-doctoral Fellowship at Indiana University (USA) which she enjoyed throughout 1994-1995.  her interests and achievements included study into nuclear matrix proteins and osteoporosis, as a periodontist in a final stage FDA drug trial for a Atridox a new treamant for periodontitis at the Oral Health Research Institute.  She was involved in teaching and lecturing to dental students, dental hygiene students and postgraduate students, clinical work in periodontics and implantology.From the end of 1995 till the present Dr McCarthy has been in private specialist practice in Perth, establishing Applecross Periodontics in 1997.  She has presented lectures numerous times for UWA University Continuing Dental Education, Diabetes Educators Association, various societies, educational facilities and for the ADA. Her special interests include the relationships between periodontal diseases, general health and various medical conditions including diabetes.  Dr McCarthy is well known for her clinical work in periodontal plastic surgery such as gingival (gum) grafting, orthodontic surgery and the placement of dental implants.  Experience has made her ever more enthusiastic about the possibilities available to help people with oral health problems and give them valuable preventive tools and education to enable patients to help themselves.
