Muscle and Method
PROGRAM DETAILS
Contrary to myths about muscle "memory," the central nervous system (CNS) is where the body stores what it learns. Muscles are essentially motors, reactive to CNS output and equipped with specialized nerve structures positioned to relay length-tension status back to the CNS. Treatments and exercises aimed at correcting muscle dysfunction abound, but many fail to correct the problem. Ideally, learned and stored motor programs are executed optimally (from the CNS out) when vital nerve structures enjoy adequate blood supply and waste removal, a process which declines when blood flow to nerve structures within muscles is restricted.
Whether riding a bike, playing the piano, or habitually compensating for an injury, motor learning is at work—with muscles becoming dysfunctional when normal motor and tissue biases react defensively, limiting and altering communication via the CNS. The resulting compensations make too much or too little energy available for nearly every muscle's optimal function. This is why many treatments and exercises do not fully correct muscle dysfunction. If the problem lies deeper, therapists must look deeper!
Participants in this one-day course will examine the biases impacting the central nervous system and learn to correct muscle dysfunction by directing treatment toward the CNS. You will learn a specific order of treatment combined with a unique way of manipulating each muscle that produces optimal results.
These methods can be easily learned and applied by massage therapists, physical and occupational therapists, athletic trainers and any health professional treating clients for muscular pain and dysfunction. Attendees will perform four specific treatment sequences combined with stretches and muscle activations that target the parascapular, rotator cuff and cervical areas as well as lower body conditions. Participants will leave this seminar equipped with new knowledge and strategies to help achieve the best possible outcomes in physical therapy, rehabilitation and sports performance.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
* Assess and treat the neuromuscular pattern underlying painful conditions of the neck, shoulder, upper and lower back, hip and leg
* Learn to interpret unique characteristics of tone and sensation felt in every client's muscles
* Perform neuromuscular treatments, including stretches and muscle activation, that eliminate stubborn motor pattern-driven pathologies from head to toe
* Confidently treat and educate frustrated clients, especially those who have "tried everything" with no sustainable improvement
* Analyze human motor system patterns that explain common muscular pathologies
* Demonstrate neuromuscular therapy sequences that target leg, hip, low back, parascapular, rotator cuff and cervical conditions
* Utilize the motor pattern dysfunction model to explain muscle dysfunction and occurrence of common trigger points
* Discover methods for discerning vital patient feedback during treatment
* Identify effective treatment methods based on muscle fiber composition
* Utilize exercises that engage the central nervous system to restore lost muscle inventory and reinforce correct motor patterns
What You Should Bring
Participants are asked to bring the following for the workshop portion of this seminar:
* Portable massage table or mat and towel
* Wear loose, comfortable clothing
* Your own painful conditions—expect results in this hands-on course!
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
DAVID LEMKE currently serves as Director of the BioPerformance Institute of North Idaho Physical Therapy/BioPerformance Institute Southwest. His work includes orthopedic outpatient treatment, development and instruction of Motor Point, Functional Neuromuscular Therapy and Kinesiological Surface Electromyography courses and Dartfish video analysis for biomechanics in athletics and rehabilitation. Additionally, Mr. Lemke performs clinical testing of exercise equipment, devices and new treatment procedures and trains massage therapists specialized in physical therapy and complementary health care settings.
He was the primary consultant to Champions Sports Medicine in Spokane, Washington, in the development of the motion analysis component of their Human Laboratory. He provides video analysis of sprinting for North Idaho Physical Therapy's Power Sports Enhancement$#153 program annually. Mr. Lemke is the developer of the Motor Point Treatment and Functional Neuromuscular Therapy methods of systematic soft tissue manipulation, designed to reduce the impact of defensive habitual motor behavior on the muscular system.
His parascapular treatment sequence was the subject of a number of studies involving Idaho State University's physical therapy department. His treatment is relied upon regularly by special education teachers for relief of motor coordination problems in children diagnosed with learning disabilities. Mr. Lemke's article "Muscle Unbound: Surface Electromyography has many uses in Clinical Practice and Research" was published in Advance for Physical Therapists in 2002. He is a licensed Massage Therapist, certified Dartfish Video Coach, Clinical Surface Electromyography Technician and has worked as a researcher, developer, consultant, clinician and educator since 1985.
