Dreaming is a universal and well-documented human phenomenon. It has now been proven conclusively that not only do we dream every night, but we must dream in order to maintain a healthy psychological equilibrium. This fact did not escape the ancients, who devised sacred places, rituals, traditions and guides, all designed to employ dreams as one tool to foster a degree of healing for those suffering physically and mentally.
Most people are very familiar with those nocturnal nightmares that command our attention in a dramatic and disturbing manner. Other dreams are less frightening, but no less perplexing. What meaning do they carry for one's life? How is one to understand their cryptic, symbolic and often seemingly nonsensical language? Can they really bring a sense of healing to someone who is hurting? At the beginning of the twentieth century, with the advent of modern psychology, C.G. Jung was rediscovering the scientific and therapeutic value of dreams.
This course will provide a historical context and a theoretical foundation for the understanding and use of dream interpretation in a therapeutic setting, based on the work of C.G. Jung. Dr. Howard Tyas, Jr. will examine the basic concepts of Jungian psychology--including the structure of the psyche, the relationship between the ego and the unconscious, the importance of being able to think symbolically and how dreams provide a self-regulatory function in the psyche.
We will then examine, step by step, the attitude one brings, the questions one asks, the nuances one notices and the attention that must be paid to the intersection between a patient's dreams and his or her current life situation. Time will be set aside for participants to practice what they have learned, whether they plan to work with their own dreams or with others.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
HOWARD W. TYAS, Jr., D. Min., Ph.D., is a certified Jungian psychoanalyst and a fee-based Pastoral Counselor. He currently has a private practice in Charlotte, North Carolina, and works primarily with adults in individual analysis, making use of dream material and expressive techniques. He also lectures; leads dream groups; and conducts monthly seminars focusing on dream work and various images which reflect what C.G. Jung referred to as the individuation process. These seminars are co-led with his wife, Karen Hodges, also a certified Jungian analyst.
Dr. Tyas has a Doctor of Ministry degree from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Texas. In 1991, Dr. Tyas traveled to Zürich, Switzerland, to study at the C.G. Jung Institute, where he graduated with the Diploma in Analytical Psychology in 1996.
The Academic and Professional International Evaluations Service has deemed this diploma to be equivalent to a Ph.D. in Psychology in the United States. Additionally, Dr. Tyas is a member of the International Association for Analytical Psychology and the Association of Graduate Analytical Psychologists (Zürich). He is a charter member of the North Carolina Society of Jungian Analysts and a member of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts. Dr. Tyas is also a licensed Pastoral Counselor in the state of North Carolina.
In his practice, Dr. Tyas understands Jungian analysis to be a form of psychotherapy which places inestimable value on a person's life story, with all of its triumphs and disappointments, its struggles and suffering, and its guilt and wrong-turnings. What makes Jungian analysis unique is that it values the wisdom and creativity of the unconscious. There is more to life than what we are aware of through our five senses or what we can rationalize with our minds.
