Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) has evolved from the theory of Sensory Integration (SI). Jean Ayres, OTR/L developed the theory of Sensory Integration in the 1960s. Currently, the terminology is used to define the innate ability of the human brain to organize, process and store sensory input with the ability to turn those sensory messages into controlled behaviors. The neurological process of turning sensory messages into controlled actions can present a diverse range of function/dysfunction. Health care professionals, educators and parents are alarmed by the fact that neurological disorders have reached epidemic proportions. SPD is at the base of many of these neurologically based childhood disorders including, Autism, Bipolar, ADHD, developmental delays and others. After 40-plus years, we are beginning to define SPD as a stand-alone diagnosis, as well as a co-morbid condition.
This unique seminar will enlighten participants with the ability to understand why we have a neurological epidemic and how to discern which patients have SPD-only cases. Critical stages for intervention will be discussed, as well as methods for preventing under- and over-stimulation of the sensory system. Effective applications will be outlined for children from infancy through adolescence. Most importantly, the audience will walk away with the ability to prevent, define and differentiate SPD, as well as develop effective programs and treatment plans across all environments.

- Differentiate between Sensory Modulation Disorder, Sensory Discrimination and Sensory Based Motor Disorder

- Develop an effective treatment strategy based upon the age of the client and the stage of treatment they are in
- Determine how to develop treatment plans that are in accordance with IDEA, educational goals and parental rights

- Examine a new look at the differential diagnoses of SPD, Autism, Bipolar and ADHD
- Determine how early diagnosis, early intervention and early recovery are key concepts in SPD
- Recognize how treatment options include all seven senses secondary to their interdependency
- Outline how behavior communicates across all environments and becomes indicative of specialized treatment
- Describe how to view the entire Sensory Processing Disorder concept and the importance of team treatment
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Charlene Young, OTR/L, CEAS, is a licensed Occupational Therapist and a Certified Ergonomic Assessment specialist with more than 15 years experience in Pediatric Rehabilitation. Ms. Young is the owner of Functional Abilities, LLC and The Appalachian Regional Neurodevelopment Center, PLLC of London, Kentucky. She has taken an active role in creating changes for the profession of Occupational Therapy by serving as President and Eastern Kentucky Director of the Kentucky Occupational Association (KOTA), and participating in structured focus groups designed by AOTA to address state and national laws governing the practice of OT. Ms. Young has received several honors as a professional, including being selected as the recipient of the "Best Practice" award for school based practice by Advance Magazine.
Ms. Young earned both her Bachelor's of Science in Psychology and her Bachelor's of Science in Occupational Therapy from Eastern Kentucky State University in Richmond, Kentucky. The college of Occupational Therapy at Eastern Kentucky University invited Ms. Young to be a guest speaker for their students and submitted her newspaper article addressing Sensory Processing Disorder, to the AOTA historical files. She continues to speak both locally and nationally, in an effort to educate her peers and help children with sensory processing disorder across the country.
